BIOGRAPHY

His intense activity in the opera world spreads from the usual great repertoire to less performed titles, as well as to contemporary music-dramas .

He stages performances according to traditional mise-en-scene (Andrea Chénier at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, at the Teatro Regio in Turin, at the Fenice in Venice and at the A.B.A.O. in Bilbao) and in the meanwhile following his personal and original inventiveness as happened for his galactic Aida, so well appreciated both by the youngest audience and by the tradition lovers.

Some of his shows (“La bohème”, “Adriana Lecouvreur”) are back on stage regularly.

 He worked as a director and set and costumes designer in the most important Italian Opera Houses (Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Teatro dell’ Opera in Rome, Teatro Goldoni in Livorno, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Teatro Romolo Valli in Reggio Emilia, Gran Teatro la Fenice in Venice, Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania, Teatro Regio in Turin, Teatro Comunale in Treviso, Arena in Verona, Festival Pucciniano in Torre del Lago) as well as in the foreign ones (Théatre de l’Opéra in Montecarlo, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo E, Théatre Municipal in Lousanne CH, Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau D, Wienerkammer Oper in Vienna A, Opéra Comique in Paris F, Massenet Festival in Saint-Etienne F, Kansai Opera in Osaka Japan, A.C.O.and Teatro Perez Gadòs in Las Palmas Gran Canaria, A.B.A.O. in Bilbao E, National Theater in Belgrade, Hungarian State Opera in Budapest).

 At the same time, he approaches the musical and operetta productions so that in Trieste, during the Operetta Festival, he stages The Count of Luxemburg and The merry widow by Franz Lehar, Rose-Marie by Rudolf Frimi and Stothart and he is present at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo with Orphée aux Enfers by Jaques Offenbach, then presented in a new production in Trieste in 2003. At the Teatro Romolo Valli in Reggio Emilia, he stages Candide by Leonard Bernstein which in 2004 was revived at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genua.

In Summertime 2001, he stages “Metropolis”, a rock musical after Fritz Lang’s motion picture.

In 2003 this play has been presented in a new version, wided and completed into two acts.

In 2003 he stages “Melologo comico” (text by Stefano Benni) at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome.

At the end of 2005, for the Compagnia Fabula Saltica he stages Stravinskij’s Histoire du soldat (Winter tours 2005 / 2006).

In February 2006 there was the world première of the new coming musical “In bocca al lupo!....e

basta!” written by Silver. Thanks to new technological systems, virtual actors (such as Lupo Alberto) could act together with real ones (the G Quartet).

 About ballets, he attends to the performing at the Teatro Regio in Turin of Stravinskij’s Petrouchka and “La Creazione del bue blu” (music by Darius Milhaud) ,both choreographed by Roberto Castello. Besides he stages “Il pranzo” by Carlo Pedini and “Pinocchio, burattino senza fili” created by Edoardo Bennato, Ivan Stefanutti, Claudio Ronda (who was also the choreographer of the work) at the Teatro Sociale in Rovigo ( still on tour, with more than 200 performances).

About moving pictures, he signs scenes and costumes of “Maggio Musicale” by Ugo Gregoretti.

In May 2004 he directs a special, extraordinary actor: Placido Domingo in “Le donne di Puccini” at the open theatre in Torre del Lago during the Summer Festival dedicated to the great composer.

In October, 2011 he inaugurated the season of the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, with a brand new staging of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. The show is already entered their repertoire and is regularly repurposed.

In 2014, the magazine "the scenographer" has dedicated to him a special issue entitled "the eclectic world of Ivan Stefanutti".

Ivan Stefanutti will appear in 2017/2018 season in United States with a new production of La Fanciulla del West at Opera Carolina, New York City Opera and in Italy at Teatro del Giglio di Lucca and Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.
