BIOGRAPHY

Claudio Scimone, a pupil of the great Greek conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos and of Franco Ferrara, is the founder and Musical Director of “I Solisti Veneti”. Scimone, who has conducted all the concerts, recordings, research work and publications of “I Solisti Veneti”, debuted in the Opera world at Covent Garden, London, conducting “L’Elisir d’Amore” and got involved in the performances of operas, concerts or recordings with many of the greatest world artistic organisations, such as Verona’s Arena, Venice’s La Fenice, Pesaro’s Rossini Opera Festival (on the occasion of the first modern performances of “Mosè in Egitto”, “Maometto II”, “Edipo a Colono”), Naple’s San Carlo, Rome’s Opera (Terme di Caracalla), Milan’s La Scala, Opera Theatres in New York, Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Zurich and the Symphony Orchestras of London (Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic), Brussels, Paris, Tokyo, Vienna, Sydney, Montreal, the Bamberger Symphoniker and many others.

Claudio Scimone is also Honorary Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon, after being its principal conductor for 15 years. He conducted and recorded the first modern integral performances of several of Rossini’s works (“Mosè in Egitto”, “Maometto II”, “Edipo a Colono” with the London Philharmonia, “Ermione”, “Armida” with “I Solisti Veneti”, etc.), and of those of other great Italian (including Vivaldi, Albinoni, Galuppi, Salieri) and foreign (Grétry’s “Guillaume Tell” and others) composers. Again with the Philharmonia, he conducted the only existing recording of Muzio Clementi’s Symphonies which received enthousiastic international press reviews.

With his memorable first modern performance of “Orlando Furioso” (Verona, 1978) directed by Pierluigi Pizzi and featuring Marilyn Horne and Victoria de Los Angeles, he led the world to rediscover the importance of Vivaldi’s theatrical works.
His interpretation of “Il Nascimento dell’Aurora” and “Il Concilio dei Pianeti” by Tomaso Albinoni, as well as his intermezzo “Pimpinone”, revealed the powerful beauty of Albinoni’s vocal works. Claudio Scimone is one of the collaborators of the Rossini Foundation in Pesaro for the critical edition of Rossini’s Complete Works; he conducted three “modern first performances” of Rossini’s works at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, and has become one of the most illustrious conductors in the history of this event.
Claudio Scimone has always been passionate about the musical education of young people, has taught the Orchestra Class at the Venice Conservatory and has been, for almost thirty years, the Director of Padua’s Superior Conservatory of Music, also holding master classes in several foreign countries.  This work is one of the reasons why he was awarded the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (the highest ranking honour of the Republic). He is the only musician ever to receive the Leone del Veneto conferred unanimously by the Regional Parliament of the Veneto Region. The University of Padua recently conferred to him a honorary law degree: on the occasion of the official ceremony, Scimone delivered a lecture on “The common threads of historical development of interpretation in law and music”
